AirTag o rastreador para perros y gatos
Updated Joylink Support TeamCompartir
Short answer: an AirTag can help you find a pet that is hiding close by — under a bed, in a bush, in a neighbour's yard. It is not built for a pet that actually runs. It needs a holder you buy separately, it only works with Apple devices, and it gives you no alert when your dog leaves the yard. A pet tracker collar is built for the collar, survives daily wear, and — if you need it — can do live location over cellular.
If you own an iPhone and your cat never leaves the garden, an AirTag on a well-fitted collar is a reasonable $35 experiment. If your dog has once slipped a leash, or your household runs on Android, it is the wrong tool.

1. Android is the deal-breaker nobody mentions
An AirTag only works inside Apple's network. Put one on a dog in a household where one person has a Pixel and the other has an iPhone, and half the family cannot see the pet at all. That is not a small inconvenience — it is the difference between two people searching and one person searching.
The Joylink Smart Pet Tracker comes in two versions: one for Apple Find My, one for Google Find Hub. You pick the one that matches your phone. The Ultra runs its own app on both iOS and Android.
2. "It fits a collar" and "it is made for a collar" are different things
An AirTag is a flat disc designed to slide into a wallet. On a pet it needs a holder — a silicone case, a loop, a dangling pouch. Each of those adds bulk, catches on fur, and gives a chewing dog something new to work on. A tracker designed as a collar puts the module flat on the strap, where it stays put.
Every Joylink set also ships with two collars in different sizes, so a growing puppy or two differently sized pets are covered by one order. With an AirTag, the collar and the holder are two separate purchases before you start.
3. Cats feel the weight, and cats are the ones who hide
Indoor cats that slip out almost never go far. Most lost-cat guidance from shelters and rescue groups says the same thing: they hide close, stay silent, and are usually found within a few hundred metres — under a deck, in a shed, in the neighbour's hedge. For that job a light finder is genuinely useful — and both an AirTag and the Joylink Bluetooth tracker work on the same principle of nearby devices reporting a location.
Where the difference shows up is weight and fit on a well-fitted collar. A disc in a bulky holder hanging off a tiny cat collar is uncomfortable and easy to lose. See our cat collar tracker guide for what cats actually tolerate.
4. Neither one is continuous live tracking — and that is fine, until it isn't
Both the AirTag and the Bluetooth Joylink tracker are network finders. They report a location when a participating phone passes nearby. In a city or a dense suburb that can be minutes. On a rural road or a trailhead it can be hours or never, because there are no phones to hear the signal.
If your dog runs — a husky, a beagle on a scent, a dog that has already escaped once — you need hardware that does not depend on strangers' phones. That is the Joylink Ultra: its own cellular receiver plus a built-in SIM, live location when you open the app, route history up to 180 days, and an electronic fence that tells you the moment the boundary is crossed. Cellular service is included free for the first three years, so there is no monthly bill to forget.
5. The three-year maths
- AirTag: low upfront, nothing monthly, but add a collar holder and a second purchase if you have two pets.
- Joylink Smart Pet Tracker: one-time price, no monthly fee, plus a coin cell every 6–8 months that costs about the same as a coffee.
- Joylink Ultra: $119.99 with three years of cellular service already included — no renewal bill, no activation fee.
- Typical subscription cellular trackers: hardware plus $5–15 every month, which is roughly $250–$500 over three years.
We wrote the full version of that maths in what a pet tracker really costs over five years.
So which should you buy?
- Indoor cat, iPhone household, tight budget: an AirTag in a good holder is acceptable — but the Joylink collar set is barely more money and is built for the job.
- Any Android phone in the house: Joylink Smart Pet Tracker. An AirTag simply will not work for that person.
- A dog that roams, escapes, hikes off-leash, or lives on acreage: Joylink Ultra. No network finder, including an AirTag, is the right answer here.

Common questions
Can I just tape an AirTag to my dog's existing collar?
You can, and people do, but tape and zip ties fail at exactly the wrong moment. A holder designed for the collar is the minimum; a tracker integrated into the collar is better.
Does an AirTag work if my dog runs three streets away?
It shows the last place a nearby iPhone detected it. In dense areas that is useful. In open or rural areas there may be no devices to report it, and you will see a location that is hours old.
Is the Joylink Ultra worth it if my pet stays home?
Usually not. The Bluetooth tracker costs less, the battery lasts 6–8 months instead of needing a weekly charge, and for a pet that stays close the network location is enough. Move up to the Ultra when the failure mode changes from "hiding" to "gone".
Do any of these need a monthly subscription?
No. AirTag has no fee. Joylink has no monthly fee — the Ultra includes three years of cellular service in the purchase price.
