Joylink Bluetooth pet tracker on a collar, no monthly fee

Whistle Alternative: What to Buy Now That Whistle Trackers Are Switched Off

Updated Joylink Support Team

Short answer: every Whistle tracker stopped working on 31 August 2025, and there is no way to reactivate one. If you need a Whistle alternative, the two no-fee options are the Joylink Smart Pet Tracker (a Bluetooth tracker that works through Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, $35.99, no plan) and the Joylink Ultra (real cellular with three years of cellular service included, $119.99). If you want a direct cellular replacement with health monitoring, that is Tractive — but it carries a monthly plan.

What happened to Whistle, exactly

Whistle was one of the original cellular pet trackers brands in the United States, and it was owned by Mars Petcare. In July 2025 Tractive acquired the Whistle brand. Instead of running two competing platforms, Tractive shut Whistle's infrastructure down completely.

On 31 August 2025 every Whistle device was permanently deactivated. The app stopped returning a location, the servers were decommissioned, and there is no firmware update or workaround. GO Explore, Switch and Health & cellular units are all affected — including ones with an active subscription paid up. If you are holding a Whistle tracker right now, it will not track anything, and a used one is not worth buying.

There was a generous exit: between July and September 2025, Whistle owners could submit a serial number and receive a free Tractive replacement, with prepaid Whistle time credited to a new Tractive account. That claim deadline was 30 September 2025 and has passed.

Why it died, and why it matters to you

The technical reason is worth knowing, because it tells you what to look for next. Whistle's popular models were built on 3G cellular. Carriers have been switching 3G off for years to free up spectrum for LTE and 5G. A tracker is only as good as its ability to phone home, and once 3G goes dark in a region a 3G tracker becomes an expensive collar charm.

That is the whole lesson: the radio standard printed on the spec sheet decides whether your tracker still works in five years. Check that whatever you buy next runs on 4G LTE.

If a Whistle collar is sitting in your drawer

  1. Do not buy a replacement Whistle unit, new or used. There is nothing to salvage and no path to reactivation.
  2. Recycle the module. It contains a lithium battery, so it belongs in electronics recycling rather than household waste.
  3. Keep the collar strap if you like it. A strap is just a strap, and any Joylink tracker clips onto it.
  4. Check that your pet's microchip registration is current. A tracker has a battery; a chip does not, and out-of-date registration is one of the most common reasons reunions fail.

The three-year maths, plainly

A cellular tracker that costs $70 up front plus the cheapest long-term plan at about $5 a month reaches roughly $250 by the end of year three, and closer to $400 if you pay monthly. Joylink Ultra is $119.99 once, and the cellular service for those three years is already inside that price. The Bluetooth model is about $42 over three years including two CR2032 coin cells a year.

That gap is the whole argument. It is not that Joylink does more; it is that Joylink stops costing money.

Which one fits your pet

For a cat: start with the Smart Pet Tracker. It is light enough for a 2 kg cat, sits on a well-fitted collar, and the two collars in the box let you get the fit right without ordering again.

For a dog that stays close: the same Bluetooth tracker covers the garden, the street and the park. Use the two-way find button when you have already walked outside and cannot see which bush the snuffling is coming from.

For a dog that roams, escapes or travels: Ultra is the one that keeps reporting beyond Bluetooth range. It stores up to 180 days of route history and will tell you when your dog leaves a safe zone you have drawn on the map.

Moving your pet over to a new collar

  1. Fit the collar first, before you attach the tracker. Two fingers should slide between collar and neck.
  2. Pick the size range that covers the measurement: S 28–39 cm, M 35–48 cm, L 38–58 cm. Every Joylink set ships with two sizes, so you can change without waiting for a parcel.
  3. Pair it with the phone you actually carry — Apple Find My on iPhone, Google Find Hub on Android. A device joins one network at a time.
  4. Give your pet two days. Most cats stop noticing a light collar after a day or two.

What Joylink does not do

Joylink does not sell a health or activity score, and no Joylink tracker is a training device. The Bluetooth models do not show a moving dot: they report where the tracker was last picked up by a nearby phone. If you want continuous live tracking over a long distance, that is Ultra, not the Bluetooth models. Being honest about that boundary is the reason the price stays where it is.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use my old Whistle tracker?

No. Whistle's servers were switched off on 31 August 2025, so no amount of resetting, reinstalling or resubscribing will bring tracking back. The device is e-waste.

Do I need a SIM card or a plan for Joylink Ultra?

No. Ultra ships with the cellular service for its first three years already included. There is no monthly fee and nothing to renew.

Will a Bluetooth tracker work if my pet goes far away?

It reports where it was last detected by a phone in the finding network, which is different from live cellular. For distance beyond that, use Ultra.

How long does the battery last?

The Bluetooth models run 6–8 months on a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Ultra is rechargeable, with up to 7 days of standby, and charges by magnetic contact.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Every Joylink tracker carries a one-year limited warranty, and returns are accepted for 30 days.

Bottom line: the best Whistle alternative is the one that cannot be switched off by someone else's business decision. For everyday finding, that is the Joylink Smart Pet Tracker at $35.99 with no fee. For roaming dogs, it is Joylink Ultra at $119.99 with three years of service included.
